The Skye Terrier originates from the Isle of Skye, on the West coast of Scotland and was bred originally for hunting fox and otter. It's origins can be dated back to the 1500's. The most famous Skye Terrier was Greyfriars Bobby, who was immortalised in the Disney movie of the same name. In 1858 a man named John Gray (Old Jock) was buried in old Greyfriars Kirkyard, or Churchyard, in Edinburgh. This loyal dog slept on his master's grave for the next 14 years until his own death. A statue commemorates this most loyal of dogs. This dog is classified as one of the Terrier Dog Group which we go on to describe in detail in the section at the bottom of this page. The Terrier dogs are small to medium size and are often described as fiery or feisty. The smallest terriers are ready to take on any opponents - a necessary attribute when hunting and killing vermin but not so good for a family pet!
